Ascending the Waihee Ridge Trail along Maui's western slopes of Pu'u Kukui rewards hikers with expansive views that stretch beyond the paths of sightseeing helicopters. The trail offers panoramic vistas of verdant rainforest valleys and the island's dynamic coastline.

Located on the windward side of Maui, this hike typically features misty conditions that create a distinctive hiking experience. The climate here supports lush vegetation and frequent waterfalls, while the cooler temperatures provide comfortable hiking conditions even during midday hours.

The trail begins with a moderately steep paved section before transitioning to a natural path that winds through native forest and open ridgelines. At various points, hikers can observe both the northern and central parts of the island, with views extending to neighboring Molokai on clear days.

Practical considerations include wearing appropriate footwear with good traction, as the path often becomes muddy after rain. For nature enthusiasts, the Waihee Ridge Trail offers glimpses of native Hawaiian plants and occasional native bird species, with several distinct ecosystems visible along the route.

To access the trailhead, follow Highway 340 to the 6-mile marker and look for the left turn marked with a signpost. The actual trailhead sits a short distance up this single-lane road, with limited parking available. Morning hikers often encounter clearer conditions before clouds gather around the mountain peaks. The trail typically takes 3-4 hours to complete, depending on pace and weather conditions.
