Stonewall Peak from across Lake Cuyamaca.
The Stonewall Peak hike is a classic climb that offers a moderate challenge and is ideal for a great family adventure. Hikers are rewarded with a variety of views over the surrounding Laguna Mountains and Cleveland National Forest and the trail leads to a monolithic rocky summit with spectacular panoramic scenery.
Hikers have two primary route options for reaching the summit. The out-and-back trail is a 3.9 mile round trip, following the most direct and popular route to the peak. An alternative looping return over the mountain's northern flanks along the Vern Whitaker and Cold Stream trails adds up to a total of 5.2 miles but rewards with more varied terrain and additional scenic views.
The trail switchbacks gradually up the side of the mountain on a surface of mostly sand and loose rock that most will find relatively easy going. Angled granite slabs near the summit will need a couple of large steps, and the sloping surface will make you grateful for shoes with good traction. For those with a fear of heights, be reassured by the metal guardrails that lead up the final stretch to the summit.
