The Terrifying 25 is a list of hiking trails in the New Hampshire White Mountains that are notable for the challenges they present. None of these routes require ropes or other equipment, some require a lot of stamina, but only few require nerves of steel when they traverse a particularly precarious section. To complete the challenge you must complete the full length of twenty listed trails, and five further trails from the elective list.
Our map shows the location of trails on the list and we also list them below. Where a trail is located near a trailhead we've linked you to downloadable route maps. Sometimes a trail starts half way up the mountain, then we describe only the length and elevation of the trail and you can connect to it as you wish. All mileages and elevation gains shown include return legs unless stated otherwise. Ensure you have a thorough understanding of a trail before attempting, particularly as many of these trails have sections that are much more dangerous when tackled in the wrong direction.
20 Required Peaks
Elective Peaks (Pick five)
WARNING Hiking in these locations and on these trails demand serious preparation due to upredictable weather, challenging terrain, isolated routes and lack of connectivity. Temperatures can drop suddenly and storms are common. Before tackling any of these trails please inform yourselves of the dangers, precautions and how to equip yourself. Be ready to turn back at the first signs of a problem - there's always another day, so long as you stay safe.
